Tilegrams is a first-of-its-kind web authoring environment, enabling journalists and researchers to produce socially just maps with statistical accuracy and style. It was designed for the production of a specific type of map: tiled cartograms, which portray human demographics by population size, not by arbitrary geographic expanse. More commonly used in the UK, tiled cartograms have been steadily gaining interest in North America. (In fact, Tilegrams enables the user to use templates created by FiveThirtyEight and NPR.) Beginning life as an open research question, within five weeks Tilegrams was a widely shared open-source release, soon appearing in stories published by Al-Jazeera English and the Dallas Morning News, and recognized by Simon Rogers of Google News Lab who offered valuable feedback and supported its release.
